The Centsational Girl Blog is my new obsession! Their DIY projects are what I call “Martha Stewart-esque”: ideas that are so incredibly innovative and clever that only artistic geniuses could conceive of them. Take these Colorful Dessert Stands, for example. Who would have thought they were made by gluing together old china and champagne/ martini glasses?
The best part of the project is that the most essential materials can be purchased either at Goodwill or any local thrift shop. Even cooler, the plates and glassware don’t have to come with entire sets. The posting actually recommended looking in the “mismatched” section (where items have no “mate”) to get great pieces for under $1!
Frosted Glass is recommended as a “primer” to coat the items before using the colored spray paint.

Even though this project wasn’t specifically designed for the DIY bride like yourself, there are many potential variations you could make in order to include it on your wedding day.
For one, you want to pair the color of paint with the general tone of your wedding. The “colorful” spray paint above might be the perfect touch to your outdoor June wedding, but might look out of place at your fancy country club wedding in November. (Side Note: if your wedding is more similar to the latter example, consider using a metallic spray paint, which will instantly give the stand a more formal look. You might also want to try using just the Frosted Glass–several coats worth, of course!)
Secondly, you must decide the purpose of the stand(s). Although it undoubtedly makes an excellent cake or cupcake stand, it could also work as a center piece, candle holder, or other general decorative item or accent piece. If you want to go the dessert stand route, consider making a tiered stand, with multiple levels of plates and cups.
